Lesson 1: match the power output of your speakers to your power source. Believe it or not, less expensive speakers with a lower power rating can sound better than more expensive models when using head unit power. Check all of your speaker wiring. Polarity can be a major gremlin with sound quality issues. If by accident your mid range drivers are out of phase (negative wire hooked to positive speaker terminal and vice versa) you can have a lot of low bass cancelation, i.e. crappy sound.
